The City Clerk oversees administration of municipal elections and election services. General municipal elections are consolidated with statewide elections, scheduled on the first Tuesday of November of even-numbered years.  All election services are provided according to the California Elections Code.

General Municipal Elections

The Mayor is elected at-large for a two-year term.  City Councilmembers are elected at-large for a four-year term.  Councilmembers serve "staggered" terms, meaning that 2 seats are open for election every two years.

Mayor and City Council Compensation

Each member of the City Council shall receive a salary, the amount of which shall be based on the maximum amount allowable on the schedule set forth in Government Code Section 36516. The current maximum amount is $300 per month.

Elegibility for Candidacy

To be elegible to run for City Council, a person must be a registered voter of Lathrop at the time nomination papers are issued. In order to qualify as a registered voter in Lathrop you must be:

• A United States citizen
• A resident of Lathrop
• At least 18 years of age on the date of the next election
• Not in prison or on parole for a felony conviction

Voter Services

• Voter Registration - The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters is responsible for countywide voter registration and vote-by-mail applications.  Voter registration forms are also available at City Hall.  Registration deadline is 15 days prior to an election.  Additional information is available on the California Secretary of State's website.

• Local Election Results - The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters provides local election results.

• Statewide Election Results - The California Secretary of State provides statewide election results.

• Histoical Election Information - The attached Chronology of Elections contains historical election information for the City of Lathrop.

Nomination Period

This is the period when individuals officially receive, circulate and file nomination papers for candidacy. The nomination period ppens Monday, July 12, 2010, at 8:00 a.m. and closes on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Please make an appointment to obtain nomination papers from the City Clerk / Elections Official by calling (209) 941-7230 beginning Monday, July 12, 2010.

If an elegible incumbent does not file nomination papers by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010, the nomination period will be extended for non-incumbents only until Wednesday, August 11, 2010, 5:00 p.m.
