Robert Oliver
Councilmember
I was born in 1930 in Aberdeen, Idaho: son of homesteaders who had migrated from Southern Illinois and Central North Dakota. I attended the public schools of Idaho and Arizona. I attended private, church-oriented colleges in Tennessee and Florida, earning a degree in Bible and Religious Education. I earned a second B.A. in U.S. History and Education and a secondary teaching credential from the University of Michigan. Later, I completed a M.A. in U.S. History from Arizona State University. I have taught these subjects from time to time in private schools of Michigan and Arizona, and have been an occasional lecturer at private colleges and universities.
I have been a preaching minister in the fellowship of Churches of Christ for 55 years. I have served churches in Florida, Michigan, Arizona and in California the last forty-seven years. I have experienced a variety of geographical, soical and ethnic environments. This has supplied me with a broad sense of people and life in general.
I came to Lathrop in 1993 to become minister to the Lathrop Church of Christ, a charge I held until my resignation in November, 2007.
Believing that "service is the rent we pay for space we occupy," I have been involved in community affairs. Some of the venues include Cub, Girl and Boy Scouts; Little League; and Kiwanis clubs. I have served on Anderson, CA City Planning Commission and nine years on the Lathorp City Council.
Family wise, I have four grown children who have blessed me with an even dozen grandchildren, six girls and six boys. Vivian, my wife, has one son and five grandchildren.
City Government is fascinating to me because of the personal interaction with citizens. It is the only venue where every citizen can speak, confront, advocate or oppose and be an intergral part of policy and the direction of the city. This fascination offsets the long hours and rare occasions of abuse that go with it.
Of particular interest to me in Lathorop is the opportunity to build a new city "from scratch." Knowing what the city perimeters will be allows good estimates of maximum populaltion and traffic volumes at full growth. Infrastructure, streets, services and enhancements can be planned from the start rather that having to be "squeezed into" an existing city.
