Dear City Officials,
I am writing to share some feedback regarding the San Joaquin River Trail—specifically the Bennie and Joyce Gatto Historical Trail. I live right behind it, so I get to see every day how much our community loves this space. It is always full of runners, families, and walkers, and it is easily one of Lathrop's most beautiful public attractions.
Because it is such a popular spot, we are unfortunately facing a growing issue with uncollected dog waste along the path. Beyond being an eyesore, it is a genuine health hazard for the many residents and children who utilize the path. It breaks my heart to see such a wonderful trail get ruined, and I worry it will start deterring people from enjoying this great city asset.
I know signs don't always do the trick on their own, so I wanted to respectfully suggest a few ways the city might help us keep the trail beautiful:
Routine Cleanup:
Adding the trail to a regular maintenance or sweeping schedule to clear the current buildup. I truly believe this is the best and most effective idea
, as it would immediately address the health hazard, restore the trail's beauty, and keep it clean for everyone.
Waste Stations:
Placing a couple of dog poop bag dispensers and trash cans at main trail entrances. (People are usually much better about cleaning up if the bags and bins are right there!)
We have such a wonderful community asset here, and I really want to help preserve it for everyone who uses it. Thank you so much for your time and for everything you do to keep Lathrop a great place to live!
